Gospel Reflection – October 13, 2026

A Pharisee invites Jesus to dinner and is amazed that Jesus doesn’t observe the prescribed washing before the meal. Jesus tells him that although Pharisees clean the outside of a dish, they neglect the inside, which is filled with plunder and evil.

Jesus addresses something crucial – we might look good on the outside, but inside be filled with evil and plunder. We can pay attention to our outward appearances, but not always pay attention to our interior lives. God sees both sides of us and judges accordingly.

We must take care to examine our spiritual lives and fill them with holy and righteous contemplations. Our outside appearance doesn’t matter if the inside is corrupted. God asks us to follow him and have clean hearts, which we can do by listening to his voice and following his commands – how is he asking you to clean your heart today?

Saint of the Day

St. Theophilus of Antioch: ca. AD 120 – 183

“Show, then, that the eyes of your soul are capable of seeing, and the ears of your heart able to hear; for as those who look with the eyes of the body perceive earthly objects and what concerns this life.”

St. Theophilus of Antioch
