Gospel Reflection – October 10, 2026

A woman tells Jesus that the womb which carried him and the breasts at which he nursed are blessed. In reply, Jesus says that rather the person who hears the word of God and observes it is blessed.

Jesus is not dismissing his mother, for of course she is blessed to have carried, given birth to, nursed, and raised Jesus. But he is also pointing out that we can also be holy, by listening to God’s word and observing it.

This can occur in several forms – reading Scripture and listening to Jesus himself. Often, these things go together, for Jesus speaks through Scripture and is the Word of God. When we listen to him, our purpose in life becomes clearer and we love more deeply. Observing Jesus’ commands brings us fulfillment and peace. How can you observe God’s word today?
