Gospel Reflection – October 6, 2026

Jesus enters a village and is greeted by Martha. As he is speaking, her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet without helping Martha serve. Martha complains to Jesus about this, but he tells her that she is anxious and worried about many things, and Mary has chosen the better part.

This is a very familiar Gospel. Martha, the worried and overactive sister, and Mary, the more contemplative sister. We can relate to both of these women at different points in our lives, perhaps even different times throughout the day. There is a place where we must be active and work diligently. Yet there is also a place where we must be still and sit with the Lord.

A life that never stops hinders us from listening in silence to God, to what he has to tell us. A life that is full of silence is good, but we must go out and work for the Kingdom of heaven, too. Today, reflect on what behavior you tend towards – Martha or Mary? Ask the Holy Spirit to help guide you to a balanced approach in your daily and spiritual life.
