Gospel Reflection – October 5, 2026

A scholar of the law asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replies that he must love God with all his heart, being, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. The scholar asks who his neighbor is, and Jesus tells him a parable about a good Samaritan who helps a man beaten by robbers.

The Good Samaritan is a familiar parable, one that beckons us to be kind to those around us. We are supposed to follow in the Samaritan’s footsteps, but often we might find ourselves being the priest or Levite, who see the person in need but passes by on the other side of the road. Our society today makes it easier and easier to do this – most people are so engrossed in their phones they can barely look up when walking.

So while physically we are passing by people that might need help because we aren’t looking at them, we are also ostracizing ourselves interiorly as well, by looking to social media for comfort and companionship. We are called to look out as Christians, to see those in need around us. We can’t do that if we always occupy ourselves with a device. Reflect on how you can begin to show mercy to others by interacting with them in a positive and charitable way – the Holy Spirit will guide you in this always.

Saint of the Day

St. Maria Faustina Kowalska: 1905 – 1938

“Let no soul, even the most miserable, fall prey to doubt; for, as long as one is alive, each one can become a great saint, so great is the power of God’s grace. It remains only for us not to oppose God’s action.”

St. Faustina
