“Go on your way;
Luke 10:3
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.”
Reflection
Jesus appoints seventy-two disciples to go out and proclaim that the Kingdom of God is at hand. They are to carry nothing, and to the households that accept them, let their peace reside. If they are not accepted in a town, they are to shake even the dust from their feet.
Jesus specifically tells his disciples that he is sending them like lambs among wolves. A meek, humble, gentle, and trusting lamb is something we can all emulate. Maintaining these attributes of a lamb brings us closer to Christ, the Lamb of God. We certainly can understand what it is like to go out among ‘wolves’ in today’s age – those who dislike Christ and his Church, who are full of anger and hate.
While we think we aren’t the wolves, sometimes we can be. This might happen when our actions and words are harsh and vicious, not full of God’s love and mercy. If we find ourselves acting like a proud wolf, we should stop and reflect – how can we find our way back to being a meek and humble lamb? Let us follow the example of our Good Shepherd, who always shows his sheep the way.
