Jesus answered him, “No one who sets a hand to the plow
Luke 9:62
and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
Reflection
Several people approach Jesus as he journeys, telling him they will follow him after they go attend to their family or bury their dead. Jesus tells them that no one who sets their hand to the plow and looks to what is left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.
The people who wanted to follow Jesus weren’t willing to give up everything to follow him. They had one more thing to do before choosing Christ – we can be the same way. We tell Jesus that we will follow him, but first we need to get our affairs in order. This is not what Christ wants us to do.
We must give him our all and not hold onto things from the past. This, of course, can be difficult to do. We are all attached to various things, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can learn to detach ourselves from worldly goods and attach ourselves to heavenly ones. Reflect on ways in which Christ is calling you to follow him more deeply.
