“Here is a true child of Israel.
John 1:47
There is no duplicity in him.”
Reflection
Jesus sees Nathanel coming towards him and says that he is a true child of Israel, with no duplicity in him. Nathanael asks how Jesus knows him, and he replies that he saw him under the fig tree. At this, Nathanael proclaims that Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus declares that Nathanael is not duplicitous; he is an honest man. Sometimes we deceive ourselves into thinking we are honest with God. We tell ourselves we are pious or forgiving, perhaps more virtuous than we actually are. These little deceptions can cause us to sin in big ways, especially if we convince ourselves that we don’t sin a lot or our sin isn’t that bad.
In order to combat deceiving ourselves, we must truly examine our consciences daily and reflect deeply on our interior lives. Jesus calls us to lead holy and righteous lives, ones that are not full of deceit or falseness. We can call upon the Holy Spirit to help us truly see our sins and work on growing in virtue and sanctity – will you do this today?
Saint of the Day
Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
| Today we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. These angels appear in Scripture, each revealing in different ways how they can help us in our spiritual journey. Let us always turn to them for heavenly intercession. Angels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, pray for us! |
