“Whoever finds his life will lose it,
Matthew 10:39
and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples that whoever loves his mother or father more than him is not worthy of him. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow him is not worthy of him either. For whoever loses his life for Jesus’ sake will find it.
As disciples of Christ, we are called to lose our life daily. This can be done in many small ways – by dying to self and practicing virtue when vice is easier. Taking the comfort out of some routine or choosing to be more diligent in prayer. By bearing these small crosses, we follow Christ and sanctify our lives.
Losing our life for Christ’s sake seems silly to our modern culture. Why choose suffering over pleasure, or trials of adversity over ease? Yet this is a sure way to grow in holiness and love of God. We are never alone when bearing a particular cross – Jesus is always with us, helping us along the way.
