“And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;
Matthew 10:28
rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy
both soul and body in Gehenna.”
Reflection
Jesus tells the Twelve Apostles to fear no one, for all secret things will be revealed. They should not be afraid of those who can kill the body and not the soul, but be afraid of the one who can kill both body and soul. He also assures them that every hair on their head is counted, and the Father cares for them deeply.
As Catholics and Christians, we experience persecution in our society that doesn’t enjoy religion or God. People can attempt to kill the body, but with true faith, it is difficult to kill the soul. Yet we should fear the Devil, who can kill both body and soul. Turning to sin constantly and consistently in life puts us in danger of losing our soul.
God wants us united with him in heaven. We must always turn to him, because he gives us true life. Even when facing persecution, we can run to our Lord and find protection in his embrace, rejecting all sin and evil and focusing only on the good and holy.
