“You will grieve, but your grief will become joy.”
John 16:20
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples they will weep and mourn while the world rejoices; yet eventually, their sorrow will turn into joy when they see Jesus again. Although they are in anguish now, joy will return and hearts will rejoice soon.
The world rejoiced when Jesus died, because Satan is the prince of this world. He thought he had defeated God. Jesus’ disciples experienced tremendous grief. When Jesus rose from the dead, their grief transformed into tremendous joy, a joy that could never be quenched.
Christ offers us this joy in a profound way. Through the Eucharist, he becomes present to us, and by listening to his voice in our daily lives, we can experience the joy and peace offered us. A disposition of joy makes any suffering in life bearable, for it comes with eternal hope. Joy in Jesus is something we can all work towards improving – ask the Holy Spirit for assistance today.
