He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers
Luke 8:21
are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”
Reflection
Jesus’ mother and some cousins are unable to get to him because of a crowd, and when Jesus is told this, he says that his mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.
God comes before family. He has to – he is our Creator and Savior. When we die, and if we go to heaven, we will be united with God forever, not our family. Therefore, we must learn proper detachment while on this earth. Of course, we must love our family, respect them, and bring them closer to Christ. But we must also follow Christ ourselves, and this requires a certain detachment from earthly goods, even those we love the most.
In fact, by detaching and acting upon God’s word, we become closer to those who also follow Jesus, and thus gain a family rooted in Christ. How can you better hear God’s word, act on it, and bring others to our Lord?
