“The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said,
Luke 7:34
‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard.’”
Reflection
Jesus asks the crowds what he should compare their generation to, for when John the Baptist came without eating or drinking, they called him possessed. When Jesus himself came eating and drinking, they called him a glutton and friend of sinners. Jesus then says that wisdom is vindicated by all her children.
Jesus compares his generation to children complaining about everything. So when John the Baptist came, they complained against him, and of course they complain against Jesus himself. This attitude of complaining and refusing to see what is in front of your face does not serve someone to grow in faith.
If we have this demeanor and don’t accept what Christ is giving us, we will find it hard to grow in virtue and holiness. Jesus offers us eternal life – why would we refuse? He kindly asks us to follow his commands, for they will lead us to heaven. Our wisdom is far less than God’s, and our ways are not God’s ways. Let our Lord lead you to himself in his infinite wisdom and love.

| “Our enemy [Satan] is more to be feared and treated warily when he creeps up secretly, when assuming deceitfully an image of peace he moves serpent-like, with those hidden approaches from which Satan receives the name of Serpent.” St. Cyprian |
