Reflection

Jesus is teaching the crowds along a lake, and goes out into Simon Peter’s boat to better speak. Afterwards, he tells Simon to lower his nets for a catch, and even though they had caught nothing all night, he still listens to Jesus. Simon catches so many fish he calls his partners over to help, and when they reach the shore, Simon, James, and John leave everything behind to follow Jesus.

Despite Simon Peter’s statement that they have caught nothing all night, he still listens to Jesus’ command. He might be doubtful that any fish will be caught, but nevertheless, he puts trust in Christ. His trust is greatly rewarded, and can be an example for us today. Many times, we might fail at something and be about to give up when Jesus gently asks us to try again.

When this occurs, we can put our trust in him – the results are usually beyond our expectations. Jesus does not disappoint when we trust him, even if an outcome looks different than what we expected. Let us always look to Simon Peter’s example when Christ asks us to do something we have previously failed at. Trust in God does not disappoint but reveals the great love he has for us.
