Reflection
The disciples ask Jesus who the greatest person is in the Kingdom of heaven. He beckons a child, and tells them they must become like children in order to enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever is humble like a child is the greatest. In the same way, the Father rejoices more over one lost sheep who is found than ninety-nine sheep who do not stray.
To be like a child can be difficult in today’s world. Our innocence is easily lost, particularly due to mass media. We can easily access content that is age inappropriate or wrong for our maturity level. With the loss of innocence, how do we maintain a childlike demeanor?
Jesus gives us a way: be humble. Children are naturally humble and trusting. They contain an innocence and joy that most adults lose to some degree. Humility makes us childlike because it forces us to rely not on our own strength, but that of others. In the spiritual sense, we can rely on Christ, putting our faith and trust in him, for he is the one who leads us to heaven.
Reflect on your childlike nature or lack of it. How can you become more humble and trusting like a little child?
