Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
Matthew 12:38
“Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
Reflection
Some Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus for a sign, but he tells them that no sign will be given it besides that of Jonah the prophet. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days and nights, so too will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth. Even then, Jesus’ generation will be condemned because they have not repented, unlike that of Jonah’s generation.
The scribes and Pharisees want a sign, but not necessarily faith. They are asking to see something, as if Jesus has something to prove. Their unbelief causes them to ask for a sign, for proof. Just as we may know some people who don’t believe in God or Jesus and ask for proof, they aren’t really asking so they can believe. It is more of a challenge.
Christ wants us to exhibit faith, not unbelief. He asks us to place our trust in him who knows all. He shows up in our daily lives in a myriad of ways. Trusting in our Lord increases our faith, especially when we see answered prayers and the way the Holy Spirit guides us constantly. Believe and place your hope and trust in God.
