Reflection
Jesus tells the crowds a parable about a person who goes out to sow. Some seed falls on rocky ground, others on good ground, and still others on thorns. Depending on the type of ground, the seed either grows well or eventually dies. Jesus then explains the parable to his disciples.
This is a parable we hear often. Depending on the type of ‘soil’ we cultivate in our hearts, the Gospel may or may not take root. We should strive to have rich soil, where Christ’s message is heard, taken to heart, and adhered to.
Yet we can also experience the initial feeling from the other types of ‘soil’ as well – not always understanding the Gospel, receiving Jesus’ words with joy, and simply hearing our Lord’s words. These are valid ways to receive the Gospel, but the way we react is what shows our faith or lack thereof. Do we not understand and give up trying to learn? Do we quickly lose the joy Christ offers us because of suffering? Do we listen to God but listen to the world more?
Let us always strive to have open hearts and minds with our faith, trusting in the Lord and letting his word seep deeply into our souls, allowing for joy, understanding, and fruit to flourish.
