“You are the salt of the earth.
Matthew 5:13
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples they are the salt of the earth. If salt loses its taste, it must be thrown out. He says they are the light of the world. Lamps are not lit and hidden under bushel baskets, but set on lampstands. In the same way, their light must shine before others.
The items Jesus compares his disciples to are useless if not used in the correct manner. If their original function is lost or diminished, they become good for nothing. We are also disciples of Christ. If we hide our light, what good are our discipleship and evangelization efforts?
Jesus beckons us to be bold with the gifts he has given us. When we are, we reveal God’s love for the world and hopefully bring people closer to Christ. We can each have an impact on particular souls we encounter during our lives. If you hide your talents and faith, that impact might not be at its full potential to reveal God and his goodness. Do not be afraid to let your light shine – the Holy Spirit will guide you in all your endeavors.
