Simon Peter said in reply,
matthew 16:16
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Reflection
Jesus asks the disciples who other people say he is and who his disciples say he is. Peter replies that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus then says that his church shall be built upon Peter, and the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.
Simon Peter’s reply to Jesus is simple and yet profound. He believed that Jesus was the Son of God, the Christ. Today we also profess this belief. This statement defines who we are as humans, and especially as Catholic Christians. Even as we experience the temptations and craziness of this world, we must always fall back on this core belief.
Jesus is the Son of God; he is our Savior and Lord. Turn to him with all your troubles and lay your life at his feet. He will transform your life and draw you closer to our true heavenly home.
Saint of the Day
Pope St. Sixtus II: died AD 257
“The Faithful offered their necks to the sword, but as soon as the Pastor saw the ones who wished to rob him of the palm of martyrdom, he was the first to offer himself and his own head, not tolerating that the pagan frenzy should harm the others. Christ, who gives recompense, made manifest the Pastor’s merit, preserving unharmed his flock.”
