“All their works are performed to be seen.”
Matthew 23:5
Reflection
Jesus tells the crowds to do all the Pharisees and scribes instruct them to do, but not to follow their example. For the Pharisees preach but do not practice, and instead glory in looking the part instead of truly practicing their own laws. Jesus also says that the greatest among them must be their servant, and anyone who exalts himself will be humbled.
We hear that the works of the Pharisees are performed to be seen. They are done to put on a show of holiness and piety, yet do not relay the inmost movements of the heart. We are to behave the exact opposite – not doing good deeds to be seen and recognized, but doing the work of Christ in secret and in humility.
It is easy to perform a good work in front of others, for we can gain recognition and a ‘job well done.’ Yet in doing so, we also grow in unhealthy pride, and soon begin to exalt ourselves more. Christ calls us to humility and service, for in those we learn how to love better and grow in sanctity. How can you grow in humility today?
Saint of the Day
Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
| This feast day was established in 1954 by Pope Pius XII. We honor Mary not only as the Mother of God, but as the Queen of Heaven, who watches over us and intercedes for all our needs. Queen of Heaven, pray for us! |
