“If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;
Matthew 6:22-23
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples to store up treasure in heaven, not on earth, for on earth treasure can decay or be stolen. He also says that the eye is the lamp of the body. If the eye is sound, the body is filled with light; but if the eye is bad, the body is full of darkness.
In our modern society, our eyes consume more information and media than ever before. Our phones and other electronic devices offer us countless distractions, filling us with varying content. What we see with our eyes affects us, whether it be good or evil.
We must take care to preserve what media we consume, especially when practically any topic is at our fingertips. As Jesus says, our eyes are the lamp of our bodies. Focusing on the good and beautiful in life fills us with the light of Christ. Focusing on the evil and darkness of the world fills us with darkness – maybe not all at once, but over time. We can become bitter and angry, forgetting that Christ wants us to be the light of the world, a beacon of hope.
Reflect on the types of media you consume regularly – do they promote light or darkness? How can you be more intentional with what you intake, through social media, television, etc?
