“But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
Matthew 6:6
and pray to your Father in secret.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples to pray in secret, unlike the hypocrites who pray publicly or give alms publicly so they can earn praise. They should also fast in secret and keep up their appearance, for the Father who sees in secret will know what they are doing.
Do you have an inner room – in your home, in your heart? Jesus instructs us to go to our inner room to pray. This can be both a physical and mental place. When we pray in an inner room, there is silence and space for contemplation. There is an opportunity to listen to God’s voice, tell him your worries and troubles, and truly pray.
In your heart’s inner room, prepare a place for Christ, welcoming him in and worshiping him. If you have a physical prayer space, decorate it with favorite images or icons. The Lord wants you to retreat to your inner room daily to rest with him – will you listen to his call?
