Gospel Reflection – April 21, 2026

The people ask Jesus for a sign so that they can believe in him – they give an example of their ancestors receiving manna from heaven. Jesus replies that his Father gave them bread from heaven, and that Jesus himself is the bread that gives life to the world. Whoever comes to him will never hunger and whoever believes in him will never thirst.

Food sustains us in a vital way. Without it, we will eventually die. It provides us with nutrients and energy. In the same way, Jesus calls himself the bread of life. With it, we will never hunger. It might sound silly for Jesus to call himself food, but that is exactly what he is – he sustains us spiritually through the Eucharist.

Jesus as “food” can help us understand how he gives us energy and nutrients for our spiritual lives and well-being. Without him, we will die spiritually and have no true life. Christ provides us not only with spiritual sustenance, but meaning and purpose; he points us to his Father in heaven, our end goal. Reflect on how Jesus feeds you spiritually each day, and how you respond to this divine grace.

Saint of the Day

St. Anselm: 1033 – 1109

“My soul, have you found what you are looking for? You were looking for God, and you have discovered that He is the supreme being, and that you could not possibly imagine anything more perfect. You have discovered that this supreme being is life itself, light, wisdom, goodness, eternal blessedness and blessed eternity.”

St. Anselm
