“So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”
Matthew 17:12
Reflection
The disciples ask Jesus why the scribes say Elijah must come first. He replies that Elijah has already come, but they did not recognize him. He tells them the Son of Man must also suffer. Then the disciples understand that Jesus is speaking about John the Baptist.
Wherever Jesus is concerned, there seems to be suffering. His cousin John the Baptist died, and our Lord’s disciples suffered greatly as well. Yet there is beauty to their suffering, for it reflects the truth they all preached and lived out.
When we follow Christ, suffering is to be expected. Jesus asks us to take up our cross daily; he will help us carry it, but the cross, whatever it may be, is still to be expected. Being a Christian comes with its fair share of trials and tribulations, yet heaven awaits if we are committed to Christ and live out his words. How can you suffer well today and follow Jesus?
