Jesus tells his disciples that the blessed are those who are poor and weeping, for they will rejoice in heaven. Woe is proclaimed to those who are rich and live luxuriously now, for they have received their consolation.

While Jesus doesn’t want us to live a life that doesn’t have any hope in it, there is a certain amount of suffering that is expected. He tells us that if we are poor, hungry, weeping, and hated by people now, our reward will be great in heaven. This is not to say we should go out of our way to make ourselves hungry or poor.

Rather, when we live by the grace of God and rely on him for all things, not counting on our riches and finding joy in material goods, we can grow in humility and trust in the Lord. Jesus promises satisfaction in the life to come when we obey and choose him. Let us always glorify Christ with our lives, especially through our suffering.
