“Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor
mark 10:21
and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”
Mark 10:17-27
Reflection
A man comes to Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him that he must obey the commandments and sell all his possessions. The man had obeyed the commandments, but could not sell his things, and went away sad. Jesus then tells his disciples that it will be very difficult for those who have many things to enter heaven. He says that men cannot be saved on their own, but with God, anything is possible.
Attachment to possessions greatly hinders our relationship with God. When we are more focused on accumulating wealth and items, we focus less on Jesus and our goal of getting to heaven.
When we die, our possessions are no longer ours; they do not matter anymore. If we can begin to let go of them now and develop an attitude of detachment, we can offer our lives to the Lord more fully. In order to do so, we must ask Jesus for help. On our own, we cannot perfectly do this, but with God, it becomes easier. Pray for the grace of detachment in your life.

“It is a lesson we all need – to let alone the things that do not concern us. He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path. It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path.”
