Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
Luke 24:15-16
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
Reflection
Two disciples are traveling to Emmaus after Jesus has died and risen. They happen to meet Jesus along the way, but do not recognize him. On their walk, Jesus explains the Scriptures to them and eventually takes a meal with them. The disciples only recognize Jesus once he blesses the bread, but at that, he vanishes from their sight. The disciples go to tell the others that Jesus is indeed risen.
We are told that the two disciples’ eyes are prevented from recognizing Jesus, at first. We, too, sometimes prevent ourselves from recognizing Christ in our daily lives. Our attachment to worldly things, our family or friends, jobs or hobbies, can all detract from Jesus in our midst.
When we focus on things other than Christ, it is no wonder that we can be blind to our Lord. Once we align our hearts and minds on what truly matters – Jesus – we can begin to see clearly, both spiritually and in our daily lives. Ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to see Christ in every moment, drawing close to him who brings us true peace and joy.
