“What are you willing to give me
Matthew 26:15
if I hand him over to you?”
Reflection
Judas Iscariot goes to the chief priests and asks what they will give him if he hands over Jesus – thirty pieces of silver. During the Passover, Jesus tells the disciples one of them will betray him, and it would be better if that person had not been born.
Judas’ question to the chief priests raises a sentiment that is popular today, even among faithful Christians. We ask the world what it is willing to give us if we compromise on something – usually our morals, common sense, and faith. Perhaps we see a more agreeable opportunity or greater pleasure if we only look the other way or denounce our faith in some manner.
The world cannot give us what we most desire – Christ himself. It offers cheap pleasures disguised as meaning and the answer we have been looking for. We should not be willing to disregard our conscience and faith for money, power, fame, or pleasure. Pray for the grace to persevere always.
