Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
John 8:58
before Abraham came to be, I AM.”
Reflection
Jesus tells the Jews that if they keep his word, they will never see death. They are confused and think he is possessed, because no one cannot taste death, even the great prophets or forefathers, like Abraham. Jesus says that before Abraham existed, he was I AM. At this, they attempt to stone him but he hides from them.
Once again, Jesus states that he is I AM. He existed before Abraham, and before all of us. Yet despite this, we existed in God’s mind from all eternity. God in all three Persons knew we would live one day and loved us before we existed – how beautiful.
As we draw close to Good Friday, we should reflect on how deeply God loves us. Jesus loves us so much that he gave his life for us. His death is personal for each of us, because we each have a unique relationship with Christ. How is Jesus calling you to ponder his love and death for you?
