Gospel Reflection – March 11, 2026

Jesus tells his disciples he has come to fulfill the law and prophets, not to abolish them. He then proceeds to say that whoever teaches another to break the least of the commandments will be least in the kingdom of heaven, but those who obey and teach others to obey will be called greatest.

Jesus points out that every little thing counts when it comes to faith. Only following the more ‘important’ commandments or teachings of the Church is not the way to become holier faster. We must follow the ‘small’ things as well. If we get into the habit of sinning in small ways that we don’t think are harmful, it adds up, and soon our conscience might be telling us it is okay to sin in larger ways, too.

This is not the way to travel down your spiritual path. Christ wants us to grow in virtue and holiness, and this is accomplished by following him, and teaching others to do so as well. How can you better obey the commandments and help others to do so?

St. John Ogilvie: 1579 – 1615

“But in the things of spiritual jurisdiction which a king unjustly seizes, I cannot and must not obey.”

St. John Ogilvie
