“Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
Matthew 5:18
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples he has come to fulfill the law and prophets, not abolish them. He then gives examples of different commandments and expands upon them – adultery, divorce, taking a false oath, and more.
Jesus emphasizes that whoever breaks the least of the commandments and teaches others to do so as well will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. It is important for us individually and collectively to follow each commandment, for that is how we better understand God and grow in holiness.
When we dedicate ourselves to understanding how Christ wants us live out the commandments and then do so, we hopefully grow in virtue. Only listening to some of the commandments and not others is also not acceptable. We cannot accept only some teachings of Christ or the commandments, but must follow them all, for they lead us to the path of heaven. How can you reflect on the commandments today and put them into better practice?

| “I ask God to let me know what I ought to do to serve Him and to purify myself; but I am resolved to wait in peace till it pleases Him to work this miracle, for I am quite convinced that He alone can do it.” St. Claude de la Colombière |
