“Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”)
Mark 7:34
Reflection
Jesus enters the Decapolis, where people bring him a man who has a speech impediment and is deaf. Jesus goes off alone with the man and heals him, ordering the man not to tell anyone. But the word spreads, and everyone becomes exceedingly astonished at what Jesus is doing.
Jesus commands the deaf man’s ears to “be opened.” What needs to be opened in our own lives? Do we need a more open heart, a better listening ear, a tongue that proclaims the Gospel? Jesus invites us to open ourselves fully to him so that we can better receive the graces he desires to give us.
There may be various obstacles in our way that have been preventing us from advancing in our spiritual life. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can identify them and work on being more open to how God wants to work in and through us. How are you called to be more open to Christ today?
