Gospel Reflection – January 19, 2026

People ask Jesus why his disciples do not fast like others, and he replies that the wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them. When the bridegroom is taken away, then they will fast. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins, but rather pours new wine into new wineskins.

Jesus offers us new wine – a renewed and better way to live. Rather than following the world and its temptations, Christ offers us true peace, along with eternal life. All this world offers is fleeting pleasure and death. Our Lord can reshape our life if we let him.

When we choose to be integrated into a Christian life and dedicate ourselves to Christ, we discover purpose and fullness of life that we had not known before. Instead of our old ways of living, old wine, Jesus beckons us to refresh ourselves with new wine that gives eternal life.

Saint of the Day

St. Fabian: ca. AD 200 – 250

“Thereupon all the people, as if moved by one Divine Spirit, with all eagerness and unanimity cried out that [Fabian] was worthy, and without delay they took him and placed him upon the episcopal seat.”

Eusebius on Pope Fabian’s election
