Gospel Reflection – January 12, 2026

Jesus comes to Galilee proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at hand. He sees Simon, Andrew, James, and John and calls all of them to follow him. They leave their fishing supplies behind and follow Jesus.

Jesus called these four men – Simon, Andrew, James, and John – who we know to be some of his apostles today. They immediately followed Christ when he called them, leaving all behind. Think of the people Jesus may have also called who chose not to follow him. Perhaps they were too attached to something and couldn’t give it up to pursue Christ. Maybe others didn’t have faith he was the Messiah.

Whatever the case, we are called to be like these apostles, who literally left their livelihoods behind and followed our Lord. Jesus wants us to be radical by not attaching ourselves to the world, only to himself. He calls us every day, and sometimes we answer positively, others not. How is Jesus calling you today, and how will you respond?

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys: 1620 – 1700

“I consider those persons who are detached from everything and attached to God alone as that little fish, remora, which turns aside all that can harm a community.”

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys
