Gospel Reflection – December 17, 2025

The Gospel today relates Jesus’ genealogy. From Abraham to David there were fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile there were fourteen generations, and from the exile to the coming of Jesus, fourteen generations.

With the list of Jesus’ heritage, we are reminded that although God, Jesus was also man, for he had family and many ancestors, too. Jesus would have known about both his illustrious and sinful ancestors’ pasts. Advent is a good time to reflect on our own families, remembering those who have gone before us.

Do we honor their memories and pray for their souls? Do we cherish those around us, such as our siblings, children, parents, and spouses? Take some time today to pray for your deceased relatives and their souls, also remembering to thank the Lord for those family members who are still with us.
