“You will be hated by all because of my name.”
Luke 21:17
Reflection
Jesus tells the crowds they will be persecuted and hated because of his name. They will be handed over, but should not prepare a defense beforehand for Jesus will give them the necessary words. Even though some of them will be put to death, Jesus says that by their perseverance they will secure their lives.
Even today, we experience persecution and hatred because of Jesus’ name. Catholic stances on divisive issues cause those who stand by Church teaching to be disliked by relatives and friends if it goes against popular opinion. At times, we are in situations that make us uncomfortable because Jesus’ way is the exact opposite of how others speak and act. For this, we may experience persecution, yet we shouldn’t be dismayed.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. His way is the true way, even if unpopular to most. We must be steadfast in our faith, no matter the peer pressure. This is not always easy to accomplish, but with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, it can be done. Ask the Lord to grow in courage and perseverance, especially in the face of adversity.
