‘Sir, here is your gold coin;
luke 19:20-21
I kept it stored away in a handkerchief,
for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding man.’
Reflection
Jesus tells the people a parable about a rich man who leaves his country to obtain a kingship. While gone, he gives his servants gold coins to trade with. When the man returns, two of his servants have gained money with the gold coin, while one hid his gold coin away for fear of his master. The two servants who earned money are commended, while the one has his gold taken away from him.
Because the master was a demanding man, the servant was afraid of him. Yet he did not do what was commanded of him, to trade his coin. In a similar way, Jesus is our master who expects us to not only use the gifts he has given us, but to live out our Christian duty as well. We are not to sit idly on earth, waiting for Jesus to return, without practicing our faith.
When we are faithful to Christ, even in the smallest of things, we can be greatly rewarded in the life to come. The Christian life is not always an easy one, yet that should not stop us from following our Lord and the Church’s teaching. How can you grow in fortitude and perseverance to listen to God’s will in your life and follow it?
