Gospel Reflection – October 1, 2025

As Jesus is journeying, various people tell him they will follow him. Before they do so, one wants to bury his father and the other wants to say goodbye to his family. Jesus tells them that anyone who looks to what was left behind is not fit for the kingdom of God.

All the people who want to follow Jesus have things they want to do first before actually following him. They are essentially giving excuses, and Jesus calls them out. If we needed to accomplish many things before following Christ, we never would. Humans like to find excuses to procrastinate and we don’t always like to commit. If this is our attitude, it will be very difficult to follow our Lord.

Jesus needs us to give him our all. We can’t look back or hesitate. We must say ‘yes’ and then follow through. Living a Christian life isn’t something we can do irregularly, simply choosing when it suits us best. We must decide if we are going to commit our lives to Christ or not, and then follow through on our intentions. Jesus will help us along the way, so ask for perseverance in your Catholic, Christian calling.

Saint of the Day

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus: 1873 – 1897

“You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love with which we do them.”

St. Thérèse
