“For the children of this world
luke 16:8
are more prudent in dealing with their own generation
than are the children of light.”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples a parable about an unjust steward. Before the master fires his steward, the steward calls in some debtors and lets them write promissory notes for less than their original debt was. The master commends his steward for acting prudently. Jesus then tells his disciples that the children of this world act more prudently than the children of light.
This parable is confusing to many, but one good lesson to gather from it is that we must act prudently. The dishonest steward was attempting to secure his future by ingratiating himself with his master’s debtors. He was making himself financially secure for the future. Likewise, we should be focused on securing our future – not financially, but spiritually.
Many people are concerned about making sure they have enough money for retirement, trips they want to take, items they want to buy, but don’t necessarily worry about their eternal future. Jesus is advising us to make this our primary concern. How are we living out this life on earth? Are we being good Christians and growing in relationship with Christ? Do we do our best to grow in our spiritual life and prepare ourselves for heaven? Reflect on how you can act more prudently for your eternal future, asking Jesus to help you always.
