Today is the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. One choice for the Gospel reading is when Mary is standing at the foot of the cross with John, the beloved disciple. Jesus gives Mary to John as his mother, and he takes her into his home from then on.

Do we also invite Mary into our homes? She is the Mother of God and has a prominent place in our Catholic faith. Mary endured the most horrible suffering, witnessing her own Son die, and yet she endured in faith. We can learn much from Mary, especially in her suffering.

When we bring Mary into our hearts, she teaches us how to love her Son better. She longs to be with us in our own suffering, to console and help us through difficulties. Jesus himself gives us his mother – let us take advantage of this great gift and constantly turn to Mary for her intercession in all aspects of our lives, especially in times of great need and suffering.

Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

Blessed Virgin Mary, Our lady of Compassion, I turn to you with filial confidence. You shared fully in the work of our lord Jesus Christ, whose Death brought life to the world. Help me now to understand the truth about the divine compassion. Teach me to accept the sufferings that come into my life as you accepted obediently your own deep sorrows. Loving Mother of the Redeemer, you consecrated yourself by submitting to the divine plan. Obtain for me the grace to make my own submission to the same wise providence, now and at the hour of my death. Amen.

Pray to Our Lady of Sorrows
