Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”
luke 6:5
Reflection
Jesus’ disciples are picking and eating grain on the sabbath, which the Pharisees call out as unlawful. Jesus asks them if they have not heard that David did a similar thing on the sabbath, and proceeds to tell them that the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.
Jesus is lord of the sabbath, Sunday, and should be the center of our day. Sunday is not just an ordinary day; it is sacred and we should treat it as such. We should not only attend Mass on this day, but adopt an attitude of prayer and reverence as well.
As Jesus’ disciples today, we don’t pick grain and eat it, but we do participate in the Eucharistic sacrifice. We are united with Christ in a special way on Sundays and should take care to remember that all day long. How do you view Sundays – as just an ordinary day or one that celebrates God’s covenant with us?
