They were all amazed and said to one another,
luke 4:36
“What is there about his word?”
Reflection
Jesus goes to Capernaum and teaches on the sabbath. Everyone is amazed because he speaks with authority. A possessed man then comes into the synagogue and says he knows who Jesus is, the Holy One of God. Jesus commands the demon to depart, and everyone gathered is astonished once again.
The people who witness Jesus casting a demon out ask each other, “What is there about his word?” They see that his word has power and sense his true authority. We can ask ourselves the same question: what is there about Jesus’ word that beckons to us? Why does his word appeal to our hearts and souls? The answer is that Jesus is God.
He is the Healer of our souls, the person who understands us more intimately than anyone on earth. Jesus’ word is appealing because we are made to be united with God, and are drawn to him, even if we don’t realize it. What is Jesus speaking to you about today? Pay attention, and you will hear his voice in your heart, calling you to him.
