“Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.”
luke 4:24
Reflection
Jesus arrives in Nazareth and reads some scripture from Isaiah. He tells the people that the prophesy is fulfilled in their hearing. They are amazed, but when he tells them he will not do the works they have heard about because a prophet is never accepted in their own home, the people become angry and drive him away, intending to kill him.
Often, those closest to us might be the least influenced on matters of faith. When we try to tell a family member or close friend how to live a certain way or ‘preach’ to them, they usually don’t take it very well. They might be less inclined to listen because they fear we are judging them. Although we want to evangelize to those closest to us, sometimes we must simply live out our faith and be witnesses in this way.
Jesus himself wasn’t accepted in his hometown. In these instances, we must let the Holy Spirit guide and inspire those we love. Our prayer and Christian living are things we can offer for our family and friends. Ask the Lord to bring those far from him closer to his loving heart today.
