“I have come to set the earth on fire,
luke 12:49
and how I wish it were already blazing!”
Reflection
Jesus tells his disciples he has come to establish division on earth, not peace. Father will be divided against son, and mother against daughter. He has come to set the world on fire.
Jesus’ fiery words today might surprise some – he wishes the earth were blazing and has come to bring division to households! One typical image of Jesus is that of peace. Why would he want to spread division in the world? And yet this is precisely his mission.
We must choose between God and the world. Jesus offers us inner, spiritual peace and comfort; the world offers chaos appearing to be peace. Jesus offers us real Truth; the world offers lies disguised as truth. We must choose – the Lord wants all of us, not just a piece. This is why there is division, because some of us choose the world, and others choose Christ.
Will you choose our God? He is the way to true joy, peace, and love. He wants to set your heart on fire.
