Gospel Reflection – July 30, 2025

Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to treasure buried in a field that a person finds, hides again, and then sells all they have to buy the field. He also says the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant who finds a valuable pearl and sells everything he has to buy it.

In both comparisons that Jesus gives, each person sells all they have to obtain the precious item – treasure or a pearl. We are called to do the same with our lives. When we discover Christ and the treasure that he is, we leave our old life behind and completely follow him. All that we had before is nothing compared to the beauty of new life Jesus presents to us.

It can be extremely difficult to give up our old selves; habits die hard, and we must put in the hard work of giving it all to Christ so that we can completely follow him. Yet we know this is worth it, because Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is worth more than any treasure on earth, and he invites us to follow him daily. How can you begin to ‘sell all you have’ and commit to Jesus?

Saint of the Day

St. Peter Chrysologus: AD 406 – 450

“O man, why do you think so little of yourself when God thinks so highly of you? Why dishonor yourself when God so honors you? Why be so concerned with the stuff from which you are made and so little with the purpose for which you are made?”

St. Peter Chrysologus
