“But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
matthew 13:8
a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
Reflection
Jesus tells the parable where a sower goes out to sow seed. Some seed falls on the path, some on rocky ground, some in thorns, and some in rich soil. The seed then grows according to where it was dropped – eaten by birds, scorched by the sun for lack of roots, choked by thorns, or producing fruit, respectively.
Which type of soil are we? Do we have a firm foundation on which to grow and learn from the Gospel, or do we quickly fall away from Jesus’ teachings because we allow ourselves to be influenced by outside sources? Strive to be the fertile soil that receives Jesus well, for that is where you will grow the most.
How do we do this? First, by truly listening to Jesus’ words, and then living them out accordingly. When we act upon what the Lord teaches, our lives are truly transformed. Not only are our hearts and minds opened even further to Christ, but we can help others become open to him as well. Our ability to be ‘rich soil’ allows the Lord to penetrate deep into our hearts, strengthening and transforming us. How can you begin to cultivate your life to better receive what Jesus is giving you?
