Gospel Reflection – July 22, 2025

Today is the feast day of Mary Magdalene, so the reading tells about Mary weeping outside Jesus’ empty tomb until she is approached by Jesus himself.

In Mary Magdalene’s agony, she does not recognize Jesus at first. She sees a man and believes it is a gardener, not our Lord. Sometimes we are blinded by our emotions and don’t see Jesus in our lives either. Perhaps it is our anger, sorrow, distress, or fear that overwhelms our senses and blocks out our ability to see God in the situation.

When this occurs, we may have to take a step back our emotions, instead looking for Christ in the moment. How does he reveal himself to you? Can you lay your troubles at his feet and ask for help? When we give everything to the Lord, especially in times of worry or trouble, he will help us see more clearly and navigate our emotions in a way that brings us closer to himself. How can you offer yourself to the Lord today, through joy and fear, love and distress?

Saint of the Day

St. Mary Magdalene: 1st century AD

Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.”

John 20:11-13
