“An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,
matthew 12:39
but no sign will be given it.”
Reflection
The Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus for a sign, but he replies that there will be no sign given to that evil generation, except the sign of Jonah. He tells them that the men of Ninevah will condemn their generation at the judgment because they did not repent, and the Son of Man is greater than Jonah.
Do you seek out signs from Jesus? While it is not inherently bad to do this, the Lord asks us to place trust in him rather than look for a physical sign of his presence. When we trust Jesus and put all our faith in him, we begin to rely on his will for us and not an outward sign that proves he is there.
The Pharisees and scribes wanted a sign because that would provide solid ‘proof’ of Jesus’ claim to divinity. But we do not need such a sign; we know Jesus is God. Through our daily encounters with him, he proves his divinity. Jesus’ love is apparent, the peace he brings to our lives speaks for itself, and the true joy we experience is noticed by others. Place your trust in Jesus and he will reward you greatly.
