“You will be hated by all because of my name,
matthew 10:22
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.”
Reflection
Jesus tells the Apostles that he is sending them out like sheep among wolves. They will be handed over and tried, but the Holy Spirit will provide them with appropriate words. In fact, Jesus says that family members will hand over family members. People will be hated because of his name, yet those who endure to the end will be saved.
In our society today, we experience being hated because of Jesus’ name. Some of us may even know what it is like to be ‘handed over’ by our own family members because of our faith. While this can be distressing and cause much anxiety, remember that Christ will always be with you. In this Gospel, he is clearly saying that following him and proclaiming his message will not result in any easy or comfortable life. Are you able to bear this and still follow him?
Satan is at work in our world, purposely dividing families over other issues, not just religion. It should be no surprise that there is animosity towards Christ and his followers, when Satan is the prince of this world. Knowing this, we can persevere in truth and trust, for Jesus is the ultimate victor. We will suffer in some way because of our faith and for proclaiming it, but we also know that the Holy Spirit will be guiding us along and giving us the strength to continue until the end.
