“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”
matthew 10:8
Reflection
When Jesus sends the Apostles out on mission, he tells them to not take anything with them. When they enter a village, they are to find a worthy person to stay with and wish them peace. If anyone does not receive them or listen to their words, they are to leave and shake the dust from their feet.
Jesus says that without cost we have received and so without cost we are to give. Jesus died for us when we were completely unworthy of such a sacrifice. Our love for him, our dedication to our faith, our vigilance in following his teachings, amount to very little compared to what Christ has done, and continues to do, in our lives. In spite of this, he still died and would do it again for you.
We must follow Christ’s example – however it applies to our lives. Give of yourself to others selflessly, knowing you might not receive anything in return. Love selflessly, even when that love can’t be returned. We certainly don’t deserve Jesus’ abyss of love for us, but he still loves us anyway. If we apply this attitude in our own lives, we will find greater peace and joy. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in giving of yourself without cost, knowing that you are following in Jesus’ footsteps.
