Gospel Reflection – July 3, 2025

When Jesus appears to the disciples after his resurrection, Thomas the Apostle is not with them. Told by the others that they had seen the Lord, he says he will not believe unless he puts his fingers into Jesus’ nail marks and side. A week later, Jesus appears again, this time with Thomas present, and Jesus tells him to put his hand and fingers into his side and nail marks. Thomas does so and professes belief, but Jesus says that those who haven’t seen and yet have believed are blessed.

Thomas’ doubt is something we all experience at times. Perhaps not pertaining to believing that Jesus is God, but maybe there is doubt in his ability to provide for you, heal you, or answer prayers. We ask the Lord for signs or revelations that will give us proof he hears us. Yet in doing so, we display our doubt and show our lack of trust in him.

When other people experience such signs and wonders, it might increase our lack of trust and faith even more. But in those moments, when you feel that Christ doesn’t hear you, know that he does. He might not always give you that sign or answer a prayer the way you want because you don’t need those things. We think we know what is best for us, but of course, only God does.

How can you increase your belief in Christ and his goodness? He knows exactly how and when to approach you, and his plan will always be perfect for your life.

Saint of the Day

St. Thomas the Apostle: died AD 72

Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 20:26-28
